People only understand the need for a great Resume’ when they are fed up and decide on a job or career change. Until this point they will have never realised that Resume’ writing for career change is a vital skill to learn.
Most enter the work place as employed and set out to work their best and see where that takes them.
Although it’s probably true that after a while many start dreaming they could work from home or start a business, few actually do something about it.
So they commit themselves to progressing as an employee and possibly climbing the corporate ladder. Each new rung will be a career change bringing opportunity as new skills and experiences come along. You will progress from there.
How you progress or climb can depend on factors such as ambition, skills, abilities and opportunities in your trade or profession plus LUCK.
None of us should expect or rely on luck, we need to set out to make things happen and create our own luck. To make the progress that you think your talents deserve you will need to reduce the luck factor and create your own opportunities.
Success in any occupation requires skills and experience. So, if you’re going to change job or career you will need to develop and acquire the skills that go with Resume’ writing for your career change.
Here are few ways to make a start;
1. Make an inventory of what you have to offer. List your all your relevant academic achievements, qualifications plus your skills and experience and don’t limit yourself to past jobs, you’ve got many talents that you use socially as well, and don’t underestimate your achievements.
2. Include anything that you’ve learned or can do that is related to a Trade, Craft, Profession, Hobby, Interest, Pastime or Volunteer experience. All are relevant to who you are and what you can offer in your new career.
3. The key to finding new work or making a career change is to search where people post jobs. Employers are looking for qualified people to fill genuine vacancies. It is the position they advertise, and they advertise all over.
4. Use the ‘grapevine’ get the word out among contacts you can trust, they will want to help.
5. Your success in moving forward with a career change or progression will depend almost totally on the skill you develop in Resume’ writing for career change and a great cover letter. The cover letter links your Resume’ to the specifics of the position you are applying for.
6. Securing any new position requires research, awareness, effort, persistence, diligence and a great Resume’. Your Resume’ is your sales brochure selling the most important person in your life – you. Your Resume’ is vital to your whole future.
7. Don’t ever give up! You need to realise that you most likely will not find your perfect position on your first attempt. People seem to expect that they will find perfection straight away. It doesn’t work like that unless you are extremely lucky.

So your changing careers and need to write a resume; but you don’t know which format to use. Your probably already familiar with either the chronological or functional format; but have decided that neither one of these will do in this situation. Well you’ve come to the right place; where you’ll be introduced to the combination resume.
The problem with using a chronological resume is that the HR manager will normally start reading at the bottom of the work history/professional experience section and continue reading their way up through your career history. This will bring employment gaps and unrelated jobs to there attention right away, which spells trouble for your employment search. Most HR mangers prefer this format because it is so easy to find what they are looking for. If you have been in the same type of position for the better part of your career this could be an excellent advantage because this shows continuity and progression in your field.
What if you have held different positions across multiple industries? There are many reasons for gaps in employment and holding positions in different fields, but this doesn’t help your resume and subsequently your career search. Don’t be discouraged though, the first thing you will need to accomplish is tossing out your old resume and getting a fresh start with a combination resume.
The first order of business with this new resume will be to create a career summary section that will emphasize points in your career that will be of most interest to the particular company in which you are interested. In particular you’ll want to indicate transferable experience and skills that best match the qualifications of the position you desire.
To make things easier on the reader you’ll also want to create a keywords section that lists all of your transferable skills. Making things easier on the reader will put things in your favor, also this section is useful if the company employs resume scanning technology.
When writing your professional experience/work history section you’ll want to present your experience in functional sections. To do this you’ll want to gather up all the experience gained over the years and collectively categorize it into particular skill areas. When finished with this section you’ll want to have at least three categories to show multiple strengths, and you’ll want each category to have at least four bulleted sentences to support it.
Next you’ll want to make a section to list the companies, locations, job titles, and dates of your previous employment. You can chose to either title this section something like work history or you can just leave the title out and it will be generally understood.

What’s foremost on people’s minds when they have to look for a new job is, “Now I have to update my resume…”. This is a task next to tedium for some people, especially if they have no computer skills, let alone typing skills. And, to add insult to injury, employers always seem to be looking for something other than what you have to offer with the new language they use when placing job ads.
It’s true times are changing and employers are guilty of over-shooting in their requirements when looking for potential employees. But it doesn’t have to be as difficult as it seems when you’re changing jobs. The truth is, employers and recruiters would like to cherry pick their potential employees, but those perfectly trained employees are usually employed – elsewhere!
It can help when searching for a new job to get familiar with the language recruiters and employers use when placing ads. By getting used to the language they use, you begin to read between the lines and their ads don’t seem so daunting anymore. Job Ad language can be a handy skill to master because you can market yourself to whatever they’re looking for — sort of turn the tables so to speak. It’s not really lying, it’s being able to creativily market yourself in today’s marketplace.
Once you figure out what the beast is looking for, then you can begin to methodically analyze what you have to offer. You have skills, experience and education — in what order you begin to advertise yourself depends on how much experience you have and what skills you have to offer.
